Default My tranny options - need advice.

a) tranny from 95 90Q w/21k for $1,300 (90 day warranty)
b)tranny from 93 90Q w/97 k for $850 (12 month warranty)
c) my tranny re-built for $425 + parts (6 month warranty)

Option c invloves shipping my tranny to Oregon for 3 days! I'm not wild about this idea
as they can't tell what partd are needed until they take it apart.

Default warranty of a) & b) logically sound reversed. that's wierd. i'd go w/ c) and tell them they can't...

go over in parts what you could buy b) for. Or, demand a 12 month warranty for a). I wouldn't buy b) because of the mileage...even if it has been rebuilt.

a and b are both from cars that were hit in the front - they are coming from two different reputable used parts/salvage companies that have very different warranty policies

Default oh, i thought you meant that all 3 were from GTofA. since you have 100k on your tranny, go w/ a) and

see if you can salvage your tranny to them for some of the payment or to someone else. Or, assuming you can get more $$ out of it then what you have in it, then trade the Audi in for something else.

my $0.02

Default given these manual trannies should go for 200k

i am tempted to go the 97k tranny and use the extra cash to put in a new clutch

Default sounds like you answered your own question. I only suggested going with a) because.......

you're only getting <3k with b) then having your tranny being rebuilt. I think I'd either let GTofA rebuild mine or buy the a) with the 21k on it.

again, my $0.02

Default Re: 200k or more. sounds like you answered your own question. go for it. any reason for the problem?

I may know this afternoon what the exact problem is, my mechanic is sending it down the street to have a tranny specialist look at it,

I think i chnaged the fluid last summer but need to check on that, I am the second owner of the car, I have all the records from the last guy who kept the car in meticulous condiditon,

do you think not changing the tranny fluid at 90k might have something to do with the probem

Default probably not, but I'm proactive in maintenance with my cars. since its synthetic fluid..........

it's difficult to say how long the fluid will last because it all depends on driving conditions (RPM's, temps, power shifting, etc.). Audi and manual states that it never needs to be changed, but I know I'm not the only one that changes it. If I remember correctly, I think someone on here changes their manual trans fluid every 50k.

Here's what I've always done when it comes to maintenance and deciding on fixing car problems:

-always change on schedule, if not before, even if it's working fine (e.g., fluids, filters, belts, plugs, etc.)
-when deciding to replace something, buy the newest, if not new, part available. If there's more than one (e.g., joints, bearings, etc.) replace them both, even if the other one is working fine because it's probably on its way out too and it can't hurt to have new parts.

I think you should find out exactly what the problem is, then have it built. These manual trans, gearboxes, clutches, etc. are built more durable than most. I'm actually surprised your having problems just at 100k, which scares me since I'm at 98,6..k or so.

Please let me/us know what you find out and do.

Default If your car won't stay in gear it sounds like the......

the ***** and springs used on the detents on the shift rods are messed up. Possibly just some of the springs collapsed, or somethig came apart somewhere.

Default That happened on my 90Q at around 65K miles.

Lucky for me I had an extended warranty that paid the $1100 repair bill. I used a super big rubber band and would attach it in various spots to hold the shifter until I got the car into the dealer to have it fixed.
