I have been having really bad ticking in my car since i got the car with 111k and at about 143k it became unbareable to hear and embarassing to drive around. So i figured it was time to get new lifter adn while i was at it do the timing belt and water pump etc. I had my friend at the audi dealership put all the stuff in for me and the car was fine no more ticking. But now when i start the car i get five minutes if ticking and it goes away which i think is normal. But then when i drive awhile and slow down to a stop the horrible ticking noise comes back. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong i cant take the noise anymore. I am not getting the oil light on at all and i changed the oil with 20/50. What could be the cause of this any have some ideas. Is my oil pump shot or is it some little thing i need to check.
THanks

I have a 1987 4KQ with 177k on the engine. Lifter noise is normal for the first few minutes after start-up but I'm surprised it occurs on your car after you replaced the lifters. Changing the brand or viscosity of oil is worth a try. Many people here swear by Mobil 1. I used to use Pennzoil Synth 5W50 and had only minor lifter noise for a few minutes in cold weather. Since I switched to Mobil 1 10W30 synth and an OEM filter about 3 months ago, the ticking has actually become more of a problem and remains for longer durations after start-up. Maybe I'll try a different viscosity of Mobil 1 or go back to Pennzoil.

can be cause by a cracked exhaust manifold or the vacum pump for brake boost.
You can remove and clean the pump or you can get rid of it alltogether with no "known" problems to your braking ability.
Also, When you had the lifters replaced, did they let them sit for a half hour before staring the engine? That needs to be done!
Also fill up your oil to the top of the dipstick line and see if that helps...
Finally, try Mobil 1 15-50 and a good quality oil filter like Mann, Mahle, OEM VW/Audi, etc...

..How does the ticking work with the cracked exhaust manifold?? Does this cause the lifters to tick or does this make it's own ticking sound
The only reason I ask is because....I noticed on my 80q (I5-10v) that there was a loud "hiss" coming from somewhere around the airbox. It sounds like a VERY loud vacuum leak!! I tried to track it down for a little while but I was unable to find anything. The hiss sounds like it could possibly be coming from the intake manifold except the car runs perfectly. I'm also quite certain that it is the lifters that are ticking.
I just wanted to see what causes the ticking with the exhaust manifold.....and try to extrapolate a lame hypothsis for my car :-p I'm hoping I can kill two birds with one stone!!
Does anybody know a common "hiss" in the intake manifold/air box area on the NG engine?? The hiss actually seems to be coming from the area in between the airbox and the intake manifold!! Any ideas at all???
TIA!

It is generally rare for a N/A I5 to have warped/cracked EM problems. It usually happens on the turbo equipped cars due to the extra stress/heat.
I'm not saying it can't happen, it's just rare...
