Dave N. and Tom S....More...
Dave and Tom,
Hose's looks to be all original and externally in good condition. There doesnt seem to be any soft spots or tears. When I listen to the steering being turned(friend turning, me hanging over engine bay)the noise seems to be emulating from the passenger side of the rack. This side is more corroded than the other(as I believe the other side is made of Aluminum or stainless steel?)But other than that system seems intact. No leaks.
As far as when I refilled the pentosin, 7.1 was used and strainer was cleaned. Also made sure nothing foriegn(dust, dirt) was let into system when cleaned. Do note though, that the p/s resivoir is filled just a little over the Max mark...is that a big deal?
Any other ideas? Thanks...

Re: Dave N. and Tom S....More...
Fluid level a little over max is ok.
When you mentioned that the noise is more pronounced in hot temps, I thought about the type of pentosin you were using.
The 11s is the synthetic variety, and is what is in use today. It has much better high temp operating characteristics than the 7.1. It's possible that a switch to the 11s may quiet down the system.
Other than noisy, your system "sounds" fine, "knock on wood", in my experience, the hydraulic system just starts leaking, with no announcements, warnings, noise, etc.

New purchase
I've been a Jaguar owner for 7 years and today I looked at an 88 Audi 5000 for a second car. The guy is asking $2500 and it has 96,000 miles on it.
Here are the problems:
Drivers window only goes 1/2 way down
Power steering is no existent
Power steering fluid seeps out the top of the reservoir (as if pressure is pushing it out).
Has no power and seems to be running on less then 5 cylinders
A/C hardly blows and isn't very cold
For $1,000 I may take on the challenge.
Any thoughts as to costs and repairs.

Re: New purchase
2500 dollars was what I paid for my car- and everything at the time worked well.(still does basically) All I needed at the point of purchase was CV boots and fluid changes...from what you say is wrong with the car you are looking at, I would just walk away. For that price of that car you should be able to find a 5000 in better condition. Also for a little more you could possibly find an earlier 5000 turbo quattro. Which is the car I long after...Also there are probably many hidden problems you are not even aware of...go to www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/9715/faq.html This provides a nice FAQ checklist...These can be great long lasting cars, but they require tons of preventive maintenence and TLC...Good luck.

Re: Power steering groans....
We have a 1991 Audi 200, 20 valve turbo with the same symptom. Am curently trying to track down the problem. Will advise what is found. The additional info we have is that it doesn't start to rub/groan until the car has been driven for at least a half hour to an hour and when ambient temperature exceeds 50 to 60 degress F. No leaks in system and steering functions are normal except for the rubbing/groaning sound when turning corners. In winter no problem.
