Default Replace them soon, or they will break-up, and clog the exhaust pipes ! more info.....

This is a common problem.
There is an Audi recal on this, for one of the cats, (drivers side). Go to an Audi dealer and see if the recall applies to your car. If yes, they will replace the cat for free.
If not, here are your options :
1) Have Audi dealer replace, about $800 part (each cat) and labor.
2) Try to get the OEM cat from Blaufergnugen.com, about $500 for the cat.
3) Try to buy an aftermarket replacement cat from (try various Audi parts vendors) about $400 each
4) Buy a universal cat unit (about $80 to $150) and have an exhaust specialty shop cut out your old one and weld in the new one.
5) Remve the cat assembly from the car, bash out what is left of the ceramic cat substrate (thats what is rattling), and put the assembly back on the car. Cost = minimal, but it is a federal (EPA) crime, and your car MAY not pass emmisiions testing.

Default You seem to be having a lot of problems with this Audi. Didn't you just buy this? (link for cats)...

Assuming I'm correct and don't have you confused with someone else, but didn't you say you've had some other problems. If so, I think I'd be going back to the dealer/used car place/from whomever you purchased the vehicle and telling them they can take it back.

The catalytic converters on these older models are a common failure. BTW, has anyone had a second set fail?

Here's where I bought both of my direct-fit cats:

http://www.discountconverter.com/converters/audi/audi_direct_fit.cfm</a

Default Sell Your Car !!

I think the maintenance costs are going to get the better of you.

I own the same make and model, even with me doing the work it's still a lot of money in parts to maintain these models. Plus I think my car was maintained better by the original owner.

My current repairs would include (Parts):
Water Pump/Belts/tensionner $300
Front struts $110 (done!)
A/C problem $50 - $1500
Cats (they are starting to smell)$800
Leaking Gaskets $400

Improvements
(I think this car is slow).
Wheels /Tires $1200
Throttle body Mods $300
CAM's $895
Port & Polish $2000

At this point I'm considering looking for an Audi
with a stick shift and a Turbo I5 engine.

Default What kind of emissions? When does it rattle?

A bad muffler or resonator can rattle also, so it is not necessarily the cat. The only way to find out for sure is to put the car up so you can hit the cats and the mufflers to see which one has loose pieces inside.

As far as the emissions go, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between cat or no cat without hooking your car up to a tester, unless you are referring to the rotten egg smell. Also, in my case, the cat was hardly even doing anything. If your car is running efficiently, the cat is really just cleaning up any unburned remains, which should be neglibible. If they are excessive, then your car is not running properly and your cats are being overworked.
