Help !
The starter pinion doesn't want to move up to the flywheel once the car gets warm, but not always. ie. the starter just turns freely without engaging....
Could this be the solonoid sticking or dry bushings ? Any fixs without replacing ? I've heard that you can lubricate the starter to free up the Oil-lite bushings ... Anyone tried this ?
Thanks !

It does sound like the solenoid is not engaging. This can be due to a voltage drop from Audi's crappy wiring (run a bigger set of leads).
It can also be due to tooth wear, spins/grinds/no noise. The internal shaft can bind. It is easy enough to get to. I would take it off and look for wear, run jumpers and watch the shaft.

Probably too late to answer this one, but I had identical problem on my 1988 90 5 cyl. I took the starter apart, found nothing wrong, bench tested it ( everything was fine) put it all back together and still did it. New starter fixed the problem.....
