Default TICKING NOISE ON 87 4000CS QUATTRO(MORE)

besides being bad lifter which i heard is common to audi 5 cyl what else could it be because i have 131k and i remember a audi mechanic saying that it couldnt be the lifters that it was mostly likely some sort of rod in the oil vacuum something i cant remember

can someone please help me out with a possible problem because sometimes the ticking goes away which leads me to think it is the lifters but if it is this other part what do i have to do to check it out or fix

thanks fro any help that can be offered

Default Do the '87's have a brake vaccuum booster pump?

Those will get noisy when they are toast, but when mine went it was more than a ticking sound. It was a really loud and embarrassing knocking or banging on mine, that would come and go. You can actually run the engine with the booster removed, so that would be an eay way to see if that's the problem. BTW, they sit on the driver's side of the engine up high and sort of look like a variation of a distributor, in that they have a shaft and a roundish end where the vacuum lines come in.

Default Re: Do the '87's have a brake vaccuum booster pump?

I think I remember being told that only the 2.2 liter engine had the vacum assist booster. The 2.3 engines did'nt need the vacum assist...but I could be wrong. Other things that may cause ticking could be a warped manifold...but this is generally a problem with the turbo engined Audi's...but it can happen to naturally aspirated Audi's too...start the car up with the hood open. If you can smell gas fumes...then you have a manifold problem.

Most likely it's just your lifters. Replace them or try Mobil 1 15-50 and a oem type filter and see if it quiets them down...hth
