What's the best way to clean the engine and engine bay?

My '93 90Q 2.8 12V has sprung some leaks over the past months which I have neglected until now.
As far as I can tell, there is an oil leak from the oil pump area?? (front of block behind the belts - can't get a good look without removing the covers though). Also, my hydraulic fluid is leeking around the hoses at the reservoir I think, staining on the hoses where the connect to the reservoir might be a clue???
There are also some oil / fuel stains in the valley between the cylinder heads which don't look fresh but I am not sure.
I'd like to give the engine and engine bay a good clean so I can identify the leaks more precisely before I do any work.
What is the best way to give the engine bay a general clean to remove the oil stains. I've looked around for garages that offer an engine steam clean service but can't seem to find any. Is there an effective DIY way of doing it - I've seen engine cleaners in auto shops but don't know how effective these really are.
Any help would be appreciated.
Either post replies here or email me on neotek@virgin.net.

Gunk can leave some spots that do dissappear after awhile.
If you have compressed air that that works nicely for getting the dust (water if you wash) out of the spark plug holes, etc.
Some have used a pressure washer. I'd assumme at a coin operated car wash, I'd be a little worried about using my 2500 PSI washer. I've been trying to find a thread on this with the search feature but can't.
If you feel like it there were threads on engine cleaning on this Forum and the A6 forum in the last six months I'd guess. If you can find those you'll get more ideas.
Here is one I found :

Also go to here for general advice I probably ignore but shouldn't :
