Can I hear it pump??

when you turn the key over you'll hear it "prime" itself just before starting...sounds like a loud BRRRR...it does this for about 2 seconds and then stops...does yours still do this?(TURN THE KEY OVER WITHOUT STARTING AND LISTEN...)

A worn fuel pump will usually make its presence known before it breaks down...there will be an obnoxious buzzing coming from the rear end of the car. Was your pump making this noise prior to the cars breakdown? If so then the pump was probably bad...it was just a matter of time untill it went. You also may want to check and make sure that the fuel pump fuse/relay is in good working order too...directions for it placement will be on the underside of the fusebox lid...

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank...acessable by a small acess lid that sits on top of the raised ledge in the rear of your trunk. Pull up the trunks carpet and look on the right side of the ledge...thats where the lid will be...

I have never had to test my fuel pump so I dont know really how to help you there...I do know that the dealer has a nice little adapter that they can hook up to the pump and see if it's still good(VW adapter 1348/3a)otherwise it seems like you could use a multimeter or something else...hopefully someone with this knowledge will post some info for you...

Also in a previous post you asked about the timing belt...and how to check it. There are a couple of allen head screws that hold on the timing belt cover...undo them and pull the cover off...then you'll be able to check the belt...
