Default There is a giant moral discussion abou this...and varying viewpoints.

Truth is i see both sides of the argument, but what it comes down to for me is this:

1. The stereo in my car is far louder and more sound killing than the headphones on the bike.

2. I can still hear cars and bike and wind above the music. Its just there to keep me entertained...

3. And the big one...distractions. I find with no music...i get distracted by all kinds of sights and sounds.

In the end..i pay a lot of attention with my eyes and ears. Do i block out some sounds i could hear without headphones? Yes...but in my experience not enough to make my daily commute any more dangerous than it is.

Default I tend to agree. I have a pair of bluetooth headsets for rider-rider communication and

my phone can connect to the master headset for telephone use. I have only used it to talk on the phone a couple times but my phone can stream mp3 audio through the headset. I have used it to listen to music while riding long stretches on the highway. I would NEVER do it in town or in moderate-heavy traffic. One plus in my case; cell has voice command so I can select tracks without taking my hands off of the bars.

If it is a matter of blocking outside noises then I don't see it being any different than driving in a car with music playing.

Default Very cool. My ipod doesnt have voice commands clearly..but i set up playlists prior to riding.

...and i f hit traffic and what not...i pull over to kill the tunes.

Most say its not different than a car with music...but the truth is that a fender bender in a car is way easier to walk away from than one on a bike. But usually...its too late at that point anyway...so what was the fraction of a second of hearing going to do for you? My bike is loud...and i do the best i can to alert cars to my presence.

I cant hear much of that over the bike anyway...

Default Seems strange, they haven't had the opportunity?

"At present the Foundation has not had the opportunity to test any of the flip up front type helmets for certification."

From what I read they have (at least) two rating systems, one for open and one for full face helmets. I wonder, when they find the opportunity to test modular helmets, will they devise a new test or simply use the full face standards?

I see them more and more. (I have two) It would be nice to see how they perform compared to the other types.

Default I've heard it's because the helmet man. knows it won't pass their chin impact test...

so no helmet manufacture has ever submitted a modular helmet for Snell testing. I think that's kind of weird, since they do test all the open face helmets as well.

There is supposedly a Shark brand helmet being sold in Europe that is certified as a full face and 3/4 helmet. So far nobody has imported it here.

Default I looked at KBC and another brand and they have some new type of certification (EOS?)...

I can't remember the designation, but as the distributor rep was telling me, Snell mainly tests with two impacts to the top of the helmet, this new standard tests with a single impact to the top, back, front, left and right. That one downside to the Snell cert is that mfgs put more composite material in the top of the helmet to pass. This makes them a little more top heavy. Don't know much about it all other than what he told me, but seems worth considering.
