Not many tires come in that size
Hey Joe...
If you are shooting for "R" compound tires...you cannot find any on Tirerack's website in that size. For ultra high performance tires you can only find BFG g-force KD tires, Pirelli PZeros, and one Michelin MMX (?). A lot more options on a 17" tire, even more on a 16" tire. I now autocross on Kumho V700 VictorRacers in 225/50/16 size...only $130/tire at Tirerack (with a treadwear rating of 50)
Say hi to Tina and Roland for me when you see them.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Nyet! long tire talk...
You can run a 235/245x16 with the legal 5mm spacer in stock. Why would you run a narrower tire with no sidewall? Since you have apparently changed rims: SP or ST you would want to still stay in the 17x8/8.5 range which is still a 235/245 wide tire.
The taller sidewall gives you a bit more lattitude for setting up the car. It will give a bit more warning before the tire breaks away, and a bit more traction on rough courses. And, it is a lot cheaper!
The rule of thumb for racing is to run the widest rim with the widest tire that lets the car turn in. That combo would be a 235/16. If you can get the aspect ratio down then you get a better gearing advantage for acceleration, and better handling. This shorter overall tire then gives you the best of all worlds. The Corvette and P car guys are running 17's at natl. instead of the factory 18's for these same reasons.
