Default dirt track w/ quattro

Hello everyone!
I race oval dirt track in Louisiana. I race in the mini stock division which means 4 cyl. only.
I currently race a (don't laugh) Ford Pinto with great success. I was wondering, since I bought my new Audi a month ago, what you guys might think about a quattro Audi on the dirt. Do you guys think it might be worth a try? I would like to do it so I would not be another guy in another Ford. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bryan

Default The only 4 cyl Audis with quattro were the old 4000 models in the early '80s.

quattro would make it hard to set up for the track since its totally different than a rear driver... and you'd have to learn a whole new driving style. But once you have lit licked, it'll probably be banned.

Default You know, the current 1.8T is a 4-cyl too and it has quattro....

but I'm assuming your talking about cheap older cars that would "dirt track worthy". I believe the 4000 did come with quattro and a 4 cyl for at least one year - but they may be hard to find. All the 4k quattro's I've seen have always been 5-cyl. But maybe it would be possible to buy an old 4k quattro and put a 4-cyl into it? Just a thought...

Thanks for your replys. I'm just trying to think of a way to be different. I have a friend building an old Porsche 924 for the dirt. It should be interesting. I'll consider the 4000 though. food for thought.

Default So, $30K A4 up against $600 Pinto? Guess who backs down when things get tight! (nt)

To each their own, I guess.

Couple of concerns, besides cost:
1) Thought the Audi 80 came with Quattro?
2) You mean they haven't banned Quattro like they did in British Touring Cars? Better dig into the rules more (try page 2).
3) You mean no other genius(?) has thought of trying an AWD, esp. an old Subarurururu?

If you can get something like a used Subaru Impreza or Legacy, VW Syncro, or older Audi, might be interesting. Just by gut feel, you should have better traction. Downside is added weight of AWD, so while you're better in corners, they can out-accelerate you. Take careful note of power-to-weight; if RWD/FWD and AWD are comparable, think you should have a winner.

I've got a little bit more than $600 in the Pinto.
You can really get some power out of the 2.3 in the Ford. I was thinking an older Audi quattro of some kind just to be different. The Pinto is hard to beat at our track. Out of 28 races last year, I had 22 top three finishes including three wins.
