Default E36 M3 for a track car.....

Well I'm still considering replacements for my S4 for track use. Thanks to all that replied to my questions about the 944 Turbo below. After looking into it, although I could find a decent 944T for relatively cheap, after modification the price would at least double. Plus I'm not convinced that the mechanicals would be reliable as I would like them to be. So I have come full circle back to the E36 M3. Although more expensive out of the box, it would most likely be less expensive to maintain. Plus, I have access to a race shop (McMillen) that runs an M3 against Galati & Probst, so they would be able to set up the car for me (suspension, brakes, roll cage etc).

My goals are to find a 97+ E36 M3. I would prefer the coupe. I have passed on a couple 4 doors already. Is there any difference in chassis stiffness between the 2 dr or 4 dr? Any advice/opinions appreciated.

Default Been looking at those also........

Problem is most are not Street legal, at least the Porsches were not. I plan on driving to & from the track. I saw a few, but many were way out of my price range and were too modified for me to feel comfortable in servicing them. Looking at around 15-16k initially for an E36 M3 and then slowly mod over the winter.

Default Paul Lambert @ STaSIS has one for sale...

that he campaigned successfully for a few years pre-audis. It's very well set-up and would still be competitive in club racing and SSC[?]

Default That car is very nice.

I drove it once, it drove and handled great. Good power. It's fully setup for SCCA T2, and could be very fun there or upgraded further for other classes.

Default why a 97+?

i can understand why the choice of 95 (3.0l) vs 96+(3.2l) cars but why does it have to be a 97+ car?

As far as sedan vs coupe, supposedly the sedans are a bit stiffer and the sedan's b-pillar provides some more rollover protection (not an issue if you plan on installing a cage)....i have heard of problems with race seats fitting in sedans because of the b-pillar location also...

btw, i went with a 95, its easier to get decent hp gains out of the obd1 cars than the obd2....but the hot setup is obd1 conversions on the 3.2 motors, but its not cheap at all....the 95's have a few things that need to be updated (valve retainers, t-stat housing, and water pump) but i'm very happy with my car

the earlier cars are going to be (generally) cheaper also...

hope some of this rambling actually helps ;-)

Default the sedans are much harder to put certain race seats in

a local shop around here needed 24 hours of labor to fit them in a E36 sedan for a bmwcca racer...
