Default Dramatic huh?

The need of a front strut tie bar on the A4 has been discussed here many times. The general conclusion was that since the A4 has a double firewall, the introduction of a strut tie bar would do little to improve stiffness. If you change the A4 anti-sway bars you DO get a dramatic effect.

However, please explain to us (STEVE) why then does the S4 have an integrated upper strut tie bar welded in place? Hmmmm? Well, its because the S4 weighs a ton more than the A4 ...and it needs it.

BTW, whose strut bar are you selling? LLteks?

I have not looked under the plastic cover of the S4, so do not know about the intergrated strut bar you are talking about. The S4 only weights 250lbs more then the V6, if S4 does have the intergrated strut bar you are talking about, it is due to the increased grip/performance of the car, not it's weight. The LLtek strut bar actually bolts the two upper suspension arms togeter via their mounting plate which in turn bolted on the chassis. Though there is a fire wall several inches in front of the bar, there is additional rigity given with the strut bar.

Default Ah, the endless debate...

I'm with the inimitable Steve S. (do you need a race manager?). 250 ahead of/on the front axis is a huge deal structurally.

It will make it stiffer. Will it be noticable? I doubt it. Both Steve S. and I drove the daylights out of this car and did not have any stress cracking at the top of the SHOCK tower. (Mac strut cars are a whole other issue.)

Default Someone on Vwvortex just cracked the double firewall on a Passat

He had a K04 setup and it happened when he launched the car with the wheels fully locked to one side. I'm sure with a modified A4 a strut bar would help in extreme situations. That's probably why Audi added one to the S4.
-dingster

Default Sure...

But you have to remember that the original structural engineering for the A4 body used some amazing computer modeling. This car is super stiff for a steet car. (Vastly stiffer than my Mazda factory rally car.) But they have to design the car to deform PREDICTABLY in an accident.

A real race car, which neither the a4/s4 are, is stiffer by a huge amount (freq.). You can't duplicate this without a full-cage. Even still, you want to tie in the suspension mounting points, and this is not legal for most racing that we can afford.
