Default I want to learn how to drive my a4 on the track without ABS....

race cars dont have ABS so I want to learn how to drive on the track without ABS. my car is no race car but I think it would be a good lession in car control. If I remove the fuse for the abs will this safely disable them. has anyone tried this before. anthing I should know? thanks

Hey Phil,

Race cars definately DO have ABS (that is, if the rules allow it).
Modern ABS is superior in every way to non ABS. Can YOU brake
each wheel separately? ABS can!

Maybe, but why bother? IMHO, you are better off developing
a feel for when the ABS activates, and keeping the car right
at that limit, instead of driving with the ABS off and having
less braking ability.

good luck,
Barry

Default yes that's true.. I still want to take a few laps without ABS

I'm interested to know what non abs feels like on the track.
I know working on skills like line, being smooth, are very importaint but I like to change things on the track and see what happens. just going around the track and trying to beat my time gets old after a few laps. I'm also not trying to drive my car @ 110% or concentrating on line all the time. sometimes I like changing lines and techniques to see what happens. sometimes this means I fly off the track and sometimes I learn something valuable.. I just want to find out if yanking the fuse for the abs will damage any part of the brake system before I do it.

Default My ABS was out for about a month...

...because of some faulty wiring behind the dash. I did a lapping day and a couple autoXs, and learned a lot about braking. However, I flatspotted both front tires and pretty much had to throw them out afterwards.

Default Use crappy tires

I happen to like my ABS a lot on my Type R (which IS a race car) and M3 (race car 2/too), but on most cars, it's too sensitive, and engages way too early. My S4's ABS was overly sensitive.

If you want to do it, just make sure you do it in a reversible manner, like unplugging the ABS motor fuse or something simple like that.

You'll probably flat spot some tires, so make sure you're ready to trash them before you attempt this.

Default Geez, I wish I had ABS on the 914! The older Audi's you could turn it off on the dash, but there

is more to it then just turning it off to learn braking. ABS replaces more then just wheel slip,it compensates balance side to side, and fore and aft. You will need a balance bar tuned properly to get all four corners working. My buddies Porsche GT3R Supercup ABS works much better then my Tiltons.

Default Yeah all you have to do is remove the fuse

But I would still not do it. (Learn to drive your car as is first).

I only remove the abs for winter solos where I *want* the wheels to lock up.

Default What? I have only dug into the ABS once on the track. I bet that's why ppl warp them.

I go right to the edge of them going off. You can tell. Don't stab your brakes, dig in smoothly and you will be able to stop just as fast as using the system. I actually save that bit of ABS for when the person in front of me decides to dig deeper then I think, and I am about to kiss their butt..

Or go Warrens way and just use crappy tires..you will slide like a Hocky puck. heh.

Default I ran thunderhill once without ABS in the S4

A couple weeks prior I had worn through a wheel speed sensor cable which disabled the ABS. I had ordered the part, but it didn't come in time for the event.

It was actually a pretty useful exercise, I locked them up a few times, but never enough to flat spot any tires. It'll definitely help you concentrate on your braking method (smooth on smooth off).

I ran an autocross without the ABS too, I missed it much more there. You definitely want the ABS for autocross.
