Default I'm looking for a good street & track tire. Leaning towards Falken 452s, thoughts welcome...

I've STFA but looking for current wisdom.

I've done three track weekends on the Falken RT-615s and I like them, but I'd like to get out of swapping street/track wheels. Doing it in 100 degree heat at Thunderhill didn't help.

Don't want to drive those Falkens on the street - too stiff/noisy. Pirelli P6s on the street wheels are bad track tires.

So looking for a good mixed use tire in a 235/40/18.

- I'm a novice track day person still but getting somewhat up the learning curve

- Safety is number one - both on street and track - dry and rain for both (Norcal winter track days). I want predictability, good behavior and communication on the track.

- A tire that can handle my somewhat heavy A4 Avant

- Decent grip on the track

- I'd like decent comfort and quiet on the street

- Reasonable durability

- Cost is not a number one consideration, but it's got mindshare

In summary, of course I want it all.

STFA here and elsewhere, the Falken 452 seems to fit the profile.

Biggest thing I didn't like was the 615s getting greasy in the 100 degree heat at Thill and picking up a lot of marbles off the track.

Same company, so any issues with heat or other things with the 452s? Better alternatives?

2nd for decent grip, ride quality, and durability, it's a great tire.

Default I had FK-452s on both my 20V Coupe and my UrQ. They worked very well for track duty...

They were also reasonably quiet, worked well in the snow and rain and lasted a decent amount of time. I had the ones on the Coupe for just over 3 years and had half a dozen track days on them.

Default I also run Falken RT615 at track events ------------->

But my first 3 or four events I ran my Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S street tires. They did remarkably well for what they were. No chunking and really did not wear toooooo fast, if run with higher pressures. Personally I would not go back to them on track as opposed to running the Falken RT 615s, but they do work ok. I'm considering going the other direction and getting true R compound tires for my track events. One other thing. I doubt you can beat the Falken RT615 for economy track tires. Cheap to buy and they really last well. Mine have 9 days (4 sessions per day) on them and they look like they are good for at least 4 more.

Default If you track your car, you should be able to put up with the "too stiff/noisy" or swap wheels.

It's part of tracking your car, imo.

And, once you get better, you'll want more anyway -- which means having a set of track only wheels with R-comps

I drive the RT615s on the street now, maybe track them for a session or two and swap at lunch for the RA1s.

Default 2nd. esp. since you live in dry California, the RT615s are not a terrible compromise

and the price is right. for better or worse, I seem to get a lot of comments/questions about my tires in the office parking lot...they def. look unique!
