Default running DS2500's this weekend...

i just bought a used set of DS2500's for the STi - fronts with 75% pad leftover.

i have two HPDE dates set at Pocono with NASA this Saturday and Sunday.

i'm thinking maybe i'll run with the stock pads day 1 or at least 1/2 of day 1 as long as i can bed the pads between runs.

is there a good way to bed a pad during an event? i've seen people swap pads mid-event...just never done it myself.

i can either bed the pads on the way to the event tomorrow morning or Sunday morning as well if that would be better - it's a 40 mile drive with ample braking along the way.

Default Re: running DS2500's this weekend...

The DS2500's are pretty tough.

You could put them on at home, bed them. drive there, and do fine. Just be careful on the road! The DS2500's aren't going to stop you until they get pretty hot.

I have a bunch of DS11's and they're just a touch grippier than the DS2500's cold. They are like having no brakes for about 1 1/2 laps. then they're great. The DS2500's will take even longer to grab, but then should brake better(than the DS11's) once hot.

Default I run 2500s on the Mini dual-purpose (street & track)

they stop fine regardless, I think.

Default I've never run the DS2500's

But when I spoke with the rep, they charted that way in the book. Based on the book, they grip hotter than the DS11's and better. But, they are worse cold.

The DS11's in the Coupe are scary till hot. When I first took it for a test drive, before I bought it. I thought I was going to cream a curb in the area where I was driving. I had my foot mashed on the pedal, and it was firm and high, but there was no respone at all. When I took the car back, I told the PO, and he said, "oh yeah, I forgot to mention that". Oops!

The PO of my 90 said the same thing running the DS11's, so he switched to the Mintex M1166's, which grab better cold.

Default I've run the DS2500 on the S8 (street & track) ...

along with several other A8's. The Ferodo DS2500 is my favorite street pad, and I've always thought of it just as it's described Here, suitable for street and light track. Friction vs temperature is extremely flat at least down to 200 oC, and I've had no problems with these pads when ice cold in the rain. Are you sure you're not thinking about the DS3000, which was the replacement for the old DS11?

Default I spent a lot

of time with the rep trying to figure that out exactly. Which was the cross for the DS11's. so I could get something that would grab colder. like the Mintex.

These one of the sites I looked at;

http://www.ebcbrakes.com/trackday&race.html

There was another which listed the DS11's, but I can't find it now.

I'm not asurprised actually, I was pretty disappointed at the level of knowledge of the people I spoke with on the phone. Most of them had no idea, other than to place an order. I can't say they were "brake" people.

I was looking at the DS2500's, but they talked me out of getting them, bacause they felt they wouldn't work well cold. I'll have to go back, and talk to them again, maybe get a different person this time.

Default I can't compare to the DS11s, but compared to the Mini's stock pads...

the 2500s are a LITTLE less grippy cold (certainly less *grabby*) but they're perfectly fine when cold; just drive sensibly until they've warmed up a little bit. I originally thought I'd be swapping back to the stock pads on the Mini for the street, but the 2500s have turned out to be fine - except that they squeal a bit on the street after they've been tracked (not otherwise).

On the Mini (which is a very light car) a set of 2500s in front lasted for FOUR two-day track events, being shared by two drivers for all of them (so think of it as 16 track days). They're great.

I'm very happy with the 2500s, myself... the guy who sold them to me is a Mini tuner (Randy Webb) who's also an instructor and very talented amateur racer. He uses the 3000s on his Mini, but recommended the 2500s for us.

Default I'll have to try them

I ran an autoX today with the DS11's, and it was brutal.

I first drove a lap or two around the parking lot, keeping my foot on the brake, and it still wasn't enough.

Coming into the first hard sweeper, after a semi-long straight, I just couldn't stop.

Luckily being a rally driver, I just threw it sidways, and powered it through. As far as autoX technique it sucked, but it kept me on course albeit not very elegant or fast.

Where do you get your Ferodo's?

Default Re: where to get Ferodo's

Raceshopper has good prices when the pads are in stock; but if they're not in stock, you can wait forever to get them. If the latter case, try Essex.

BTW: In the 1960's and '70's, the DS11 was probably the preferred pad in Formula One. I've never used the DS11, but I can believe that it works well hot, but only when hot.

Default for the Mini specifically, webbmotorsports.com

but also Raceshopper is good - i've had good luck with things being in stock, but YMMV.

The 2500s should be infinitely better than what you describe with the DS11s.
