Well, my dad and I are soon to be the proud owners of a dedicated track car. An '83 UrQ. We bought it to avoid the troubles of pushing out regular cars ('02 C5 and '96 A4) and possibly damaging them. Yeah, there are cheaper/better/more this, that and the other thing, but it's an ABT modified Audi and I like it.
Anyway, on the subject of seats, this is going to be a car with a cage and harnesses. Can non-reclining (fixed back) seats be made to slide on rails? Can we modify the brackets to allow the seat to be in one of two positions: far back for me (6 feet tall) and closer in for my dad (5'9")? Or do we just need to get a "pad" of some sort to fit in the seat for him?
TIA,
Jon

The same guy that did O0 Ia's seat rails did mine. What you can do is take the stock seat rails and chop any excess vertical metal, and weld on what looks like the vertical part of a regular bracket. Does that make sense?
What is nice about this is that it gives you adjustability, but what's bad is that 1) it raises you like Matt said, and 2) the stock rails can be of questionable strength if you get into a really bad wreck.
My preference would be to ditch the stock rails and extend the cage so that the seat is bolted to part of the cage.

my Recaro seat bolted right up with a little fab work. You can get the seat lower with the side mounts and on any angle (semi-permanent). If you crash hard enough to rip out the stock Audi rails...it was nice knowing you Jon.

I have a Corbeau and sliding brackets in mine. It's fairly easy to build your own, once you know what they look like. Their brackets can be used on other seats.
If you're racing, though, you'll have to add a seat back brace, which renders the whole thing useless while on the track. But the back brace can be removable.
I also have a Safety Devices roll bar...fits like a glove. Totally removable, but it will cost you as much as a custom welded cage.
