Default What tires should I get for track events?

Going to do some track days at Sebring, Homestead, Road Atlanta.. Is it worth getting an extra set of S03's and using my current ones on the track? Or are Kumho ECSTA's or the $123 P-Zero's the way to go? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Default I run Kumhos on a second set of wheels

can't beat em. Plus they ought to last a year or two if you don't do too many events. You will really appreciate the extra stick in the dry.

Default R-compound tires are the way to go...

You can get heat-cycled, shaved Kumho's for about the same money as a new set of S03's. I ran street tires at Road Atlanta twice, and it's really amazing how much improvement there is with the Ecsta V700's I used last time.

I'm running stock size (225/45) on my stock rims and they stick better than my 235/40 S03's on my 8.5" SSR rims.

Default Disagree, you learn much more on street tires.

IMO, only after around 12 track days are you ready for R-compound tires. (I have no idea how much experience RobG has)

Default i learned that my yokohama avs sports are NOT GOOD on a wet track

29psi up front and 28psi out back and i was still slipping and sliding all over the place. i did notice ~5mph increase in entrance speeds though.

they absolutely rocked during the dry. fairly predictable and very even wear with 34psi all around.

i'm going to look into some comp kumhos or comp toyos for my next event should the skys again open up and dump buckets on us. =)

Default Slipping and sliding == learning.

And, in the wet, R componds can be scary, though full tread Toyos do well in the rain, I'd suggest those if you insist on Rs.

Tire pressures on the AVS Sports really made a difference in the rain, bad pressures sent me into a berm at Laguna. S-O3s might be better than AVS sports in the wet.

Default Sounds like Falken Azenis (sp?) is right for you...

...it's a cheater street tire. It's close to an R-compound like a Kumho V700 but is still a street tire.

Default

They're fine in the wet (BTDT). The track was really just that slippery.

Default Nice sig

But the other guys are right. Plus I've run AVS Sports on an S4 on both wet and dry tracks. Awesome tires. They hold up to abuse VERY well, and they stick like mad. Nice and preditable in the wet too.

You're supposed to be slipping and sliding just a little bit on r compounds too (edit: wet OR dry), but if you're not comfortable with the feeling on street tires, the you won't be comfortable w/ it on race rubber.

Warren, who passed a lot of people on r compounds the last week

Default I concur...

I ran Falken Azenis' (245/45/17) at TWS this last weekend. They aren't as grippy as a R-compound, but they are close. I was very happy with them and will continue to use them.

They are ok in the rain. I noticed a progressive loss of traction with no surprises.
