Default 4wd necessary for boston winter?

hi, just moved back here after living in CA for five years. my audi is all ready for the snow, but we're not so sure about my wife's minivan.

it's a 2000 honda odyssey, which is fwd (but no traction control). all-around good car, and fine in the rain, but i've never had it in snow and we live on a hill.

some say to swap it for a pilot or other suv. (my wife doesn't want an audi -- sad.) others say the winter's not that bad.

your thoughts?
Matt

Default I wouldn't worry about it.

FWD is fine in the snow. If you are at all concerned about traction, mount a set of dedicated snow tires on it, she'll be fine.

Default FWD is fine for snow...

I lived with it for many years on all-season tires until this year when I bought my A6. Previous car was a front driver Toyota Camry V6, and I never got stuck in anything, no matter how bad. AWD/4WD only necessary if you have a steep driveway to navigate.

Remember, 4WD or AWD will only help you get around...only ABS will help you stop, regardless of drivetrain type!!!

You don't need a Pilot; the fwd minivan will be OK with good all-season tires.

Default My wife loves her Pilot...

she has really been the spoiled one, previous car was AWD RAV4. My A6 is my first AWD car, and I love it in the snow!!!

I agree with you, however, that the FWD Odyssey should be fine in the snow here. No need to trade it in for a Pilot.

FYI - Larry, I had a line for a set of S6 door trim for your wagon, but I got outbid at the last second from the ebay germany auction. Sorry.

Our AWD stable...

Default i'd rather drive a fwd minivan than most SUVs in the snow

Most SUVs are *NOT* well designed for snow. High center of gravity, lots of mass, etc. do not help in the snow.

What about a subaru legacy wagon? Or she could always just put snow tires on the minivan, I'm sure it'll do fine.
