Alright gents (and ladies), need some help w/ some questions for those that know the '01 A4 2.8...
I have a friend looking at one and he is ready to pull the trigger but I told him I would do some quick research for him. First, in '01 for the 2.8 is it the B5 or B6 body style? Second, what are some of the more pronounced or known problems with that engine? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It is the B5 platform...
and the 2.8 is a fairly reliable engine, no turbos to worry about, but also less tuneable (no huge HP gains if your buddy is into that sort of stuff).
Other than that, I do not believe that there are any issues with the engine, other than makign sure it is properly maintained.
It was the last year the 2.8 engine was used. In 2002 for the A4 (B6 platform) and the A6, they went to the 3.0

I owned a '97 2.8 that I drove up to 112k. More here:
very smooth, relatively quiet engine - zero vibration through the steering wheel, shifter, or pedals - much smoother than the 3.0 in my B6 .
No tourque down low, esp. pulling away from a stop with the AC on. The update to 5 valves/cylinder in '98 helped somewhat I believe.
I averaged ~ 25 mpg, 75% highway. Not the one to buy if he wants to tune.
That engine had been in production since the early 90's, so it was likely largely debugged/refined.
Only problems I had were as follows: the idle air control valve failed around 60k, the thermostat went around 70k, the belt tensioner became noisy around 100k (a jet-like whine) when accelerating on the coldest days, and the MAF may have been going when I sold it - CEL light was coming on, but engine ran fine. Overall, a nice engine for that particular car. Really wish I had held onto mine.

Nice engine, nice car-some big maintenance over 100k
At around a 100k, the 2.8 needs timing belt & water pump, around $ 1,750. I think. Cats are due around the same time, about $ 1,250.
Cars with mileage approaching 100k seem like a bargain until you get the service bills.

Some of them need chains :-P
Audi timing belts do need to be changed at about twice the frequency of those in the Japanese competition, and the system has a much stronger tendency towards catastrophic failure than, say, that of an Acura.
