Am I off base here with Clair Audi?

So far I've only been there for an oil change and wiring up my buttwarmers, but they were really really nice to deal with in addition to doing a good job. They really were nicer and more friendly than any other garage I've been to, including dealerships.
As an added bonus, they even have free WiFi in the waiting area.

And at $10 an hour difference, suddenly Clair seems like a bargain. I can't believe I just wrote that $110/hour is a bargain. Damn, I'm breaking out into hives.
Independents used to seem like such a good deal.

He tends to play the "I'm new to Audi and don't know any better" card far too often. Stick with Jeff Lloyd or take your business elsewhere.
Personally, I'd rather go out of my way to deal with Joe Graves at Ira -- courteous, professional and no BS.

They list a couple of Jaguar links on their website and one of them goes directly to my favorite Jag forum (jag-lovers.org).
Do you recall their labor rate?

and I don't think the invoice listed the number of hours. I did supply my own parts (the wiring harnesses) so I may have been charged a slightly higher rate anyway (pretty standard practice).

So service writers still play dumb to increase commission payout on bills they run up. At least Clair has Jeff, he wouldn't do that.
Other advisors there estimate A8 tranny replacement at 8k, double the indy rate. Pretty much a no brainer decision, 1 yr dealer warranty vs 3 yrs at tranny shop.

That's just their business model. If you have them do the work, you have to assume you're going to get charged the retail price for the parts.
Not defending what the service guy told you, but he's going to get overruled by the business guys every time.
It's a bit like telling a restaurant they're overcharging you for chicken because you can get it cheaper at a grocery store.
