Got a ticket on 495 today. Some advice with dealing with unmarked cars:
I was doing 80 in a 65 and I passed a black van that apparently had a state trooper in it. He caught up to me and issued me a citation for $150. He had me clocked and estimated at 80 but not under radar. I don't normally use a radar detector…so I wouldn't no otherwise.
Here's what was odd:
The van was unmarked and didn't even have a state issued license plate….which was part of the reason why I sped past him doing 80. On 495, 75-80 is the norm. I've seen other unmarked cars that have a collection of antennas off the trunk…and even have a license plate that reads "state" etc. on it.
Do I have any recourse?
Should I just pay the $150 and not bother with trying to contest it? Honestly, the best that I could get would be $50 off the ticket cost….but even that isn't worth three hours of my day out of the office.
Thoughts, advice, recommendations?

Contested mine a few years ago, 95+ on 495.
Took it to court, the cop had lost the paperwork. I walked away w/ no fines.
Might as well show up.
Worse case scenario, you waste a few hours of your day and pay the same fine.
Best case, you waste a few hours of your day and get no fine.

I've seen unmarked 'stangs, crown vics, Explorers/Expeditions. Never a van...
what kind of plates were in it and what kind of van was it? Did it have sirens/lights/etc?
that's a new one :-/
but best thing is schedule a appeals date and go for it. Worst case, you lose and end up paying the fine. Not best case, judge reduces it and pay the lesser fine. Best case, win and walk away paying nothing Usually the court dates are a while away, so the cop may not even show up or have the paperwork.

yeah, the insurance rate is what kills you. Spotting some unmarked aren't too hard...
the crown vics are generally the easiest to spot IMO. Dual tail pipe, tinted out, sometimes and antenna on the trunk. Most are black/grey and maroon ones.
Explorers/Expeditions are usually tinted out, most of the time, you can see the lights thru the back window. A lot of them I've seen are the light blue colored ones.
I've only seen one or two 'stangs on the pike out west.

Did he write down the distance he clocked you for?
A friend had a ticket thrown out because that vital piece of information was missing. He didn't even know that was a law - the magistrate tossed it on her own.
