Default If you have to tell her that, do it.

Why not step up to a 4.2 though? Its the A6 engine to have if you aren't going 2.7T or 2.8. The 3.0 is the engine I'd definitely avoid.

Default 2.8 Belts are cake, they're the easiest to do IME.

12V or 30V, I much prefer to do a 2.8 TB over any other engine. After that I'd have to say 2.7T, 4.2 belt drive, then 1.8T.

Default so Shine and Clair both quote ~$1900.. and some other VW/Audi dealer said $900?

..that's a big difference. Are you sure the VW/Audi dealer understood that you had a 3.0 instead of a 1.8T?

Default Nah, she does over 100 miles of mixed driving a day to work and back.

Nothing larger than a V6 for her. If I could, I'd put her in an A4.

Default Coments were verbal.

The cam adjustment mechanism is oil pressure driven (like the 2.8 but more complex). But unlike the 2.8 all cams are driven by the belt and timing is adjusted by moving the sprocket relative to the cam via oil pressure. Complex system, small oil passageways.
