I spoke with the owner...
He's the third owner of the car. First one owned it for three years, second owned it a very long time and the current owner has owned it for about 5 years. It was indeed originally sold to South Africa, where it spent most of its life. Aside from some fresh paint, it is unrestored.
Oddly enough, the current owner was looking for an MG only to discover that he did not fit. The DKW as available at the same auction and, after a trial fitting, a successful bid was made and the little two-cylinder was his.
