Cutting a hole in the ducts will only give you heat when the rest of the house gets cold. It won't help much. A space heater is a very nice thing.
As for the "outside only" rating, mine does start to smell when the tank gets low (I use a 30 pounder) so I just fill it when I start to smell gas. Never had any issues working inside with it. That said, it does throw some serious heat. Be careful getting too close to it or in spaces with low ceilings.

Since the furnace itself is right next to the garage, the garage will get a disproportionate amount of the air flow, and the furnace cycles on and off pretty rapidly when it's cold. And the fact that the garage is 9.5' x 20' x 7' doesn't hurt (in this specific case -- it does in other ways!)
I just finished installing an insulated garage door, and the two other exterior walls are mostly below grade, so it shouldn't take that much heat to keep warm. We'll see...

it could allow carbon monoxide from your vehicle to enter the air sytem of your house. Defintely NOT something you want. (Cutting into the HVAC system would also violate code).
I agree with 4Driver - if you have a natural gas line, go with one of the gas space heaters, that's what the professional garages use. See the link for one that's has excellent reviews and doesn't cost too much.

Wish I had natural gas, I'd get this --->

the lenders could write all the crap paper they wanted, because wall st would immediately buy it. the banks would take the riskiest BBB-class loans, and repackage them into bonds - which would allow them to achieve AAA (top-tier) classification. then those bonds could be sold off to mutual funds as "low risk," despite being built upon the riskiest mortgages. this is why all our 401Ks got kicked in the nuts. everything was built upon the foolish assumption that real estate would always appreciate.
wall st deserves everything they have coming to them. the homeowners are still idiots, but wall st purposefully screwed all of us.

But the very root of the problem is that people borrowed money under terms that they could not meet. Without these "victims" the rest could not have happened.
Honestly, I really have no sympathy for anyone: not the idiots who signed up for sub-prime loans, the shysters who wrote the loans or even the people who lost money in their poorly invested 401k's.
I understand the need for the bailout, but forgiving debt is rubs me the wrong way. I also have a real issue with paying the same shysters who wrote the loans to go back and renegoatiate the terms. If this is allowed, I can guarantee you that it won't be a full week before all the sleazy mortgage companies are on the radio urging all their customers to come in for a "renegotiate colsultation". Soon they will be counselling the "victims" on how to work the system to maximize their take and eventually engaging in questionable behavior to "help" some "victims".
