New Englanders, when do you typically start watering your lawn?

I'm a new homeowner and I have yet to fire up our irrigation system yet this spring. So, just wondering how you know when to start a regular watering schedule.

though you may be tempted to start now, because it is such nice weather and you want to get a head start, it is New England and the weather can change from gorgeous to bitter cold in a second. Start in the beginning of May and I found it best to water your lawn in the early morning, around 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM. By doing it this early you get less chance of evaporation and smaller chance of winds carrying moisture out of your grass. If your house had previous owners and they did not take good care of the lawn, start off watering deeply in the morning, and then later in the day. And if you have dry spots, sprinkle some lyme and fertilze your lawn right about now. Congrats on the new house.

Some grass has grown, but I would certainly like more coverage as there are too many bare spots now.

I will be doing my anual dethaching and Step 1 application either this weekend or next, then I will start watering.
My guess is that my town will start mandatory water restrictions starting June 1st.

- I've also read that instead of running it say, 10-15 minutes per zone every morning, it's more effective to run it 20-30 minutes every other morning. It sounds like that incremental time is more/most beneficial in regards to offsetting / accounting for drying and evaporation. Makes sense to me, anyway, so that's how I run mine.

its been cool enough that it doesn't need it yet. Plus you only need to water 1" a week at most ...to keep the lawn green (preferably in the early AM)
