OK MA drivers, let's talk car excise tax. How do they come up with the calculation for the valuation
of your vehicle?
My '02 A4 was valued at only $850 more than my '99 Ford Explorer. I would have thought that the difference would be greater.
Just curious what they based their calculations on?

Be thankful it goes down so fast. % of list is 90% in yr 1, then 60,40,25,10,10,10%...in out-years
Because your Audi was probably mfg in 2001, both it and the Explorer have been depreciated by 90% already - works out to be $850 difference in your case.
Excise tax is then 2.5% x Valuation.
--------------
The excise is based on the value of the motor vehicle as determined by the Commissioner of Revenue upon certain percentages of the manufacturer's list price in the year of manufacture. The excise valuation is not based on the actual purchase price or "book value" of the vehicle. The percentages set forth in the statutory depreciation schedule that are applied to manufacturer's list price are as follows:
In the year preceding the designated year of manufacture 50%
In the year of manufacture 90%
In the second year 60%
In the third year 40%
In the fourth year 25%
In the fifth and succeeding years 10%
Excise tax is then 2.5% x Valuation.

Because they know that your car is a piece of...
j/k ))
There is just a standard calculation based on model and year. That is all. My 2002 A6 4.2 was valued mich higher than my wife's 2003 Honda Pilot. It would be interesting to find out the calculation tables for the various makes and models.
Just be glad your car was only valued $850 higher...sure, maybe it worth a lot more, but at least you don't have to pay really high taxes on it!!!
