<i>[...]The flier, which has made its way to inspection stations, dealerships, insurance agencies, and police departments, falsely warned drivers that the 25-year-old green registration tags are being phased out. It says, incorrectly, that if motorists wait until after the new year it will cost $65 to swap the old tags for a new plate with red letters and numbers.[...]</i><ul><li><a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2008/12/green_license_p.html">http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2008/12/green_license_p.html</a</li></ul>

with one mounted on your car. A guy here just took the Inspector's Test and said there was a question about it. Inspection stations are getting much stricter in general, unless you're OBD I.

Use a low key place where you get to know the owner, use the place for gas and tire plugs etc..., and build a relationship
If they nit pick over green plates , it better be due to serious enforcement. Emissions is way more important than green plate BS

in NH the would not pass my 81 911 because I did not have a windshield washer tank or pump up front (was removed because it's a track car but still street driven) I stated well the car is not driven in the winter when cleaning the windshield with washer fluid is really needed...
Anyway I drove it for two years with an outdated inspection sticker and never had a problem, now it sits in my garage waiting for a top end rebuild and the funds to do so.

...something like that would certainly be noted on the RMV website if true. The only thing they mention is if the plates are no longer "legible" and requires replacement...which could be rather subjective on the part of an inspection station operator or police officer.

My garage had no problem passing my spec miata on nearly bald r-compound tires. They've never said anything about the harnesses instead of seatbelts, and I think one year the horn wasn't working and that wasn't an issue either :-)
There are many inspection shops...if someone gives you grief, just take it elsewhere :-)
