but does clarify that if the car was sold, traded, etc., anything essentially where the car is no longer in possession that the 7-day transfer rule applies.
So, I still think the answer is either a borrowed dealer plate or settle all payments and paperwork via mail, register the car legally, then drive it home.

I did the same thing as BD. That method works without issues
It was also the method I was advised to follow after talking to my insurance company, and the out of state dealer voiced the same opinion.

here's another alternative no one has mentioned
to be perfectly legal, you do one of these three things
1) send it back to MA on a trailer
2) pay for it and register it, get the plates, then go back to pick the car up and drive it home
3) Use the 7-day rule, which states that you can use your existing plates as long as you've lost possession of your old car.
Of these options, the third is the one that could be fudged a bit. I've never done this, but here's what I would do:
Park your current car in the driveway of a friend you trust, make a bill of sale for a realistic but slightly below-market price, give him the title, but DON'T MARK IT UP OR SIGN IT. Then, take your plates off and go get the other car. In the unlikely event that you get into an accident on your way back, then you would have to go through with the imaginary sale that happened a few days ago to your friend. That way, you'd still be legally insured.

I still think #2 is the best option. Let's say he does #3 and the unthinkable happens...
...an accident on the way home from picking up the car. Sure, using the method you suggest would cover the new car, but it would take some explaining to his insurance company if he was still driving the old car while the new one is being fixed. I know a long shot, but accidents are...well...accidents and as such hard to predict.
I still say consult with the insurance company to see what they recommend. My guess is that they will recommend #2.

of course -- if an accident happens with #3, the old/current car has to be sold, no question
I actually don't think any of the approaches is necessarily 'better' -- they just optimize for different things.
#1 makes the best use of your time but costs more
#2 is the cheapest, but you have to go to NY twice assuming you want to check the car out in person before paying for it
#3 combines the best of #1 and #2, but carries with it the risk of being forced to sell your old car.
