High revving when accelerating from a stop – Gearbox malfunction

I have a 2010 A4 FWD with 88k miles. A few months ago it randomly started revving up to 3,000-4,000 rpm’s when I accelerated from a stopped position. It will go really slow and a couple of seconds later jerk a little then accelerate fine. A few weeks later I got the message “Gearbox malfunction: you may continue driving”.
Dealership found fault code P178F00. Said pressure control valve soiled and needs to be replaced. CVT fluid was clean. They quoted me $2,800 for new hydraulic control module. They also said there was no guarantee that this would fix the acceleration issue. I declined out of fear of spending $2,800 to clear a fault code and the original problem would remain.
It’s driveable but just annoying and at times an annoyance to the car behind me. I have no issues with accelerating other than randomly from a stopped position.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
