About The Audi Best Buddies Challenge

The Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle is a five-star cycling experience that takes place on Saturday, September 6 in support of people with intellectual disabilities. Riders begin at the lovely Chateau Julien Wine Estate in Carmel and ride 100, 62 or 15 miles down a stunning stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway. For those who do not ride, this year there will also be a five kilometer run and three kilometer walk lead by Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis at the finish area in San Simeon. Open to all ages and abilities, the event has something for everyone.

Whether this will be your first organized ride or your thousandth, you haven't done anything like the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle. It's truly "the only five-star ride."

Join celebrities, professional athletes, and hundreds of riders with and without disabilities and cap your summer off with a bang by joining Best Buddies on the road to Hearst Castle.

From the AOA page:

As the official vehicle of Best Buddies International, Audi proudly returns as sponsor of the annual Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle on Saturday, September 6, 2008.

The event joins hundreds of cyclists together for a 100-, 62-, or 15-mile ride down a spectacular stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway from Carmel, California to the historic Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Participants enjoy breath taking views of the Pacific Ocean while raising funds and awareness for Best Buddies International.

Last year, a fleet of Audi vehicles led over 800 cyclists on a ride that raised over $3 million in support of Best Buddies. Participants included Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver as well as such celebrities as Rob Lowe, Greg German, and Andy Baldwin.

The journey concludes with an exclusive party for all cyclists and guests at Hearst Ranch featuring a gourmet barbeque and intimate concert. Past performers at the concert have included rock legends Cheap Trick and alt-rockers Third Eye Blind and Sugar Ray.

As title sponsor of the event, Audi will showcase several new vehicle models with displays at various stops throughout the 100-mile route. One hundred percent of the money raised at the 2008 Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle will go to funding Best Buddies programs. The Best Buddies programs offer opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment for people with intellectual disabilities.

Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies International has grown to include more than 1,300 chapters in 32 countries, impacting the lives of more than 350,000 people with and without intellectual disabilities.
