CPO Clarification
How does CPO work? I am under the impression that i can take a car to a dealer and have it inspected for ~ $1500. if it passes it is then CPO'd with a warranty.
How far off am I on the details?
thx..

Technically, the dealer has to own the car to certify it.
CPO is a selling point for used cars on Audi dealer lots. They are *supposed* to do a thorough inspection, fix the bigger issues and pay $ to AoA for a transferable warranty good at all dealers Reports on dealer cost have varied between $500 and about $900. The "retail" value of a CPO'd car over one that isn't is about $1500-$2000.
If you've bought a car from a private party or non-Audi dealer, some dealers have agreed to take that car in, certify it and then sell it back to you. At a premium over their cost for time and trouble, of course. Subject to negotiation.
Technically, though, they have to own the car to do that, and offer it for resale. That usually means you pay sales tax and licensing on "your own" car. Which effectively about doubles the amount paid to the dealer for the CPO. That's the by-the-book way.
Limit for cars that are eligble are less than 5 years old and under 70-75k miles (I forget the exact number).
AoA now offers an Audi-branded aftermarket warranty called Pure Protection. It's available through some/most dealers and is actually administered by a 3rd party company. They have varying levels of coverage, and the highest tier appears to be pretty similar to CPO coverage. The car must still be under the original factory warranty. Cost is probably in between the straight CPO and CPO+sales tax. Subject to negotiation.

CPO discussion from the archives
