the shop where i changed my oil yesterday (yeah, i'm too lazy to do it myself) wanted $90...seemed a bit steep.
i last smogged my previous car 3 years ago...and i recall it being $20, or have prices gone up?

Those machines cost the stations something like $80k.
But AWD are exempt from the dyno, which is a 2-wheel test only. They will still do the **** probe test, though. I doubt they cut you a price break for not using the dyno.
Check your registration notice carefully. If it says Test Only Station, you must find one of those. Yours is probably not in this category since it's only a couple of years old, but take a look.
Cars that have to go to a Test Only place are usually older cars that meet a profiling algorithm the DMV uses to detect cars that are more likely to be gross polluters. Yes, the DMV is profiling. But the good news is that if you have to go to a Test Only place and it fails, the DMV will cover the first $500 of repairs, which also have to be done at an approved place.

at higher speeds and rpms.
so how do AWD's get tested if they don't jump onto the dyno--same as usual? isn't that kinda biased? what if an AWD was a gross poluter with all the mods in em at higher rpms?

I was curious to see what the shop would do. Would they try to run the Audi on their two-wheel dyno? Nope, just used the sniffer on the tailpipe, got in the car, and stood on the gas for a couple of minutes. $60 later I had my certificate. You didn't think YOU'D get a price break for no dyno, did you??
