Default Lunar eclipse shots....

Basically, I have no clue on how to take a picture of the moon. I will have to have an astronomy buddy of mine set me up with a telescope and mount (and instructions) to try to do better another time. I think that I'll stick to taking regular type photos...

The setting; Pinehurst Rd. near Orinda, CA:

Audi content:

Red moon. It was very hazy out, and the moon was still dim.

Eugene (aka "crapple0") met me out there in his S4:

Another shot of the locale, a bit later:

The shadow is just about cleared:

Lastly, this totally humiliating infrared shot that crapple took of yours truly. I brought beers and this is his gift to me?! Anyway, I've gotta work on my technique!

Default 3rd from the bottom is very nice.

You shoot the moon like a day lit item. Fast shutter speed.

<a href="http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/lunar-eclipse.shtml">One thing to remember is that the moon, like the earth, gets its illumination from the sun, and therefore since it is gray needs an exposure pretty much the same as a sunlight scene on earth. The Sunny 16 rule; 1 / ISO @ f/16 -- but with about 1 stop + compensation because you want it to appear light gray not medium gray. When its closer to the horizon though, and the light has to pass though more dirty air, it is one to two stops dimmer. There are a lot of variables. For this reason bracketing is well worthwhile, and if you're shooting digital check your LCD and histograms often. And of course while in eclipse it will be much dimmer, making it possible to shoot it much longer after sunset without it burning out."</a>

Default Yeah, I actually did do some research and knew what to do, but damned if they don't

look like sky and telescope shots!

The one bigger (grayscale) shot of the moon was:
1/80th second
f11
ISO 100
640mm (200mm f2.8 lens <i>x</i> 2x extender <i>x</i> 1.6 multiplier of the Canon 10D)

It's just not a satisfying experience shooting the moon with 35mm equipment...a telescope is necessary!

Default I hear ya. I'm really bummed not to have taken any shots of the moon.

Just didn't have the lenses necessary and the haze made it impossible to get the moon while eclipsed in focus. Oh well.... next time.

Default Speaking of Pinehurst Rd

I saw this article in this month's Men's Journal magazine. I need to get over there and check it out.

Default Redwood Rd. really is good. Pinehurst is too tight in places. Even together they're

a fairly short run. I'd peruse some of the detailed information that Stoney has assembled about roads in the South Bay - they're longer and therefore more fun...

If you do go to Pinehurst or Redwood, don't forget that these are immensely popular roads here in the East Bay with road bicyclists (myself included) so keep an eye out on those blind curves for us! <ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/253552.phtml">Link to post with South Bay drive information</a></li></ul>
