Default PSA: Guys around Sac and Davis, beware of guys trying to sell you speakers out of a van :)

I was filling up my girlfriend's car while visiting her in Davis, and noticed three guys trying to sell some "top of the line" speakers to someone. The guy luckily declined - they then asked me if I wanted some, but I told them I knew that scam and they got the hell out of there. I got nailed by the same scam about 5 years ago, so I was about to call the cops, but I felt lazy and let em go. The ones I bought actually sounded reasonable for a dorm - added a sub and a good amp .

Anyway, the speakers are worth about $50 - you'll see people who were taken by the scam trying to get their money back on Craigslist sometime, selling a system simply dubbed "Digital Audio" - always try to sell as some top-of-the-line system .

I wanted to go act like I was checking out the speaker and then drop it on the ground, but there were 3 of them so I figured it wasn't a good idea.

Default Yeah, but they appeal to every guy's love of deals thats are too good to pass up

Actually a pretty good scam - they tell you they went to pick up 8 loudspeakers for their boss, but the loading dock gave them 12. No one really belives that story, so most people think they are stolen, in which case they are excited to be getting such an awesome deal. The good scammers even place ads in magazines with list prices - it's all BS, any one can place such an ad. Quite convincing until you get home and think about it with a clear mind .

Default when it happens to me i call the police.

i tell the guys to hold on while i go call a friend to bring me the money. they are always happy to wait when they think money is coming. usually the police don't do much, but i think it is enough to scare the **** out of the guys that they dont ever do it again.

Default LOL, I went to Davis and got asked by guys in an Astro van to buy speakers at least 5 times over

the years I was there. One of my friends got one of those speakers for his dorm for $50. Like you said, good bass and for playing loud. Definitely flea-market type stuff.

Default LOL, speaking of scams... beware of guys selling "designer" colognes

That have "higher oil content, so the scent lasts longer" than the real ones you buy in the store. I thought that was funny when that guy walked up to my car as I was driving away from my apartment in Davis... Funny stuff.
