Default quattro + Bridgestone S-03's + snow = not bad

Wasn't really my idea to go to Tahoe in the snow, but the S performed better than expected.

Kinda cool that I qas able to get to the snow chain checkpoint without pause.

Attendant: Quattro?
Me: Yes!
Attendant: Alright. Go.

Between Donner Pass and Grass Valley, there was one part where a truck cut in front of me in an area where braking was difficult. With the ABS howling and tires sliding a little bit, I was able to correct it and go to the right.

All in all, not bad however I would get a set of snowtires before embarking to Tahoe in the snow again.

Default you were lucky.

S03s are not designed to be in that cold of weather. Plus, their tread design is not suitable for any type of snow driving.

On that note, a snow storm snuck up on me in Tahoe and I had to make my way out with Pirelli P6000s.

Now that was fun.

Default I knew that going in

It makes you appreciate how important tires are in driving in non-ideal conditions.

Default you were VERY lucky they didn't check your tires

i hit a checkpoint once with 5 miles to go to my destination...they would not let me pass on my ES100's because they don't say M+S on the side.

i should have listened too...i went around the checkpoint on back roads and got stuck going up an unplowed hill. you think being stuck is scary? wait until you're trying to move uphill, all four tires peeling, and you're still sliding BACKWARDS.

never EVER will i go into snow country on summer tires again.

Default ^^^ Agrees w/ everyone. Lucky is an understatement.

I have S03s and I wouldn't have the guts to do that. When I headed up to Reno, I take a tour bus because I don't have snow tires for 19s.

Default it wasn't that bad this weekend

I went up Sunday, and it was essentially dry the whole way up (at least to S.Tahoe), and around most of town. Plus, it wasn't that cold (thus the rain). I was up last week right after it had a semi-decent snowing (really a light dusting the E.Coast/snow country folks would just scoff at), and would've been SOL w/o winter tires. Had ABS and ESP kick in more times then than evar before.

That said, they do tend to keep the main roads fairly clear pretty quickly, but weather can change even quicker. Way I looked at it when I got my tires was either a) spend the few hundred bucks for snow tires and be safe, or b) take the risk of spending a few thousand+ in potential damage repair.
