VAG block 020 on San Francisco 91 Octane gas

Anyone notice that the gas in the SF Bay area is making your ECU Pull the timing back quite a lot?
Filled up Shell 91 gas, timing pulled back about 5 degree max. Costco 91 gas, timing pulled back was up to 10 degree.
Why do we have to pay the most expensive in the nation and get the crappy 91 octane gas... arg!!

I got at least 3 tanks of 'bad' gas from 2 Chevron stations last summer/fall. I was pinging all over the place until I put in some 76 race gas. I've been going to a 76 station since with no problems.
Also, my irratic fuel gauge started to work again after 2 tanks of 76 - go figure.
