I went to a very highly respected firm in Walnut Creek. One of the best in this area. I could get a reference for you in the San Jose area if you would like. Here is a general rule of thumb.
If it is a major firm and the lawyer is a partner, you are looking at least to spend about $350-$500 per hour. If you use one of their understudies you are looking at about $150-$250 per hour. They are going to most likely want around a $10,000 retainer if you pick their firm. If you need more details and things to watch out for, shoot me an e-mail. If the soon to be X gets a lawyer and she is not employed you could end up paying for her lawyer as well. I just hope you were married for under 7 years, otherwise you end up paying alimony until they get remarried or die.

I hope you can work things out amicably. If it is going to be an uncontested matter (ie, you can agree to certain things in advance), the cost should be lower. I think I spent about $1300, but that was 14 years ago.
Hope this doesn't have to do with that job you were looking at in SoCal.
Hang in there, I need a driving instructor.

I found an attorney I like...referred to me by another Audi friend (who is an attorney himself). Someone from the Silicon Valley Law Group...very close to me..which is nice. I have an appointment next week.

california re law is just that, governs all of california but each association/county has it's own by-laws and seperate forms which makes things tricky. our area actually has 2 associations which makes things even more confusing.
i'd strongly suggest you at least interview Rossi, Hamerslough, Reischl & Rossi.
Dean Rossi in particular.

I have never had to hire their services, but they come highly recommended through a very good client(realtor) of mine.
feel free to email me anything else you'd like.
