Would an Oakland to Santa Clara commute kill me?

If your wife works in SF, the Pleasanton BART station will get her there in 49 minutes. And there's plenty of parking before the 8:30 rush.
Also, 680 is a better commute down. I live in San Ramon and drive down 680, onto 237 to Caribbean. 38 miles each way, and 45 mins 90% of the time, and 60 mins on a rare occasion.
As for the cost of housing, and what you get the east bay vs. Oakland, it is a (slightly) better deal. The climate is always about 10o warmer than on the bay. When I was looking in July '03, the price of a fair size condo in the bay side of the east bay was close to the 3br 2.5bth house I bought in Livermore. Nothing huge, but with a small backyard, and no shared walls.
Also, the 680 route has a several side roads I've discovered over the years, so there is more than one option to get down when traffic backs up. And they don't involve street/traffic lights at each block, so you continue to move at a pretty good clip.
FWIW- 2 co-workers were looking at living in the Oakland/Berkley area, One of them ended up getting a place in Livermore 5 minutes from Pleasanton BART (at least until they build the Livermore extension) and the other one is in Pleasanton.

I enjoy Pleasanton much more than Fremont. Home prices are about the same or cheaper in Pleasanton vs. Fremont, plus the climate, schools, etc. are better in Pleasanton. Home prices are a little cheaper in Livermore. However if you need to take 580 to 680 every morning, that interchange can be painful.

Well, that and the fact that we would have to pay $700k for a "fixer-upper" a block off el camino on the peninsula. Parking somewhere SoMa is a good idea in either case.

Pacifica. There are areas of Pacifica that are incredibly beautiful and sunny. The property value is generally lower. It would be a short drive to Bart in Daly City and it would be a closer commute to Santa Clara.
Something to consider. I almost bought in that area in 99. Some of those places have amazing views.
