An off-duty Suffolk County police officer and another passing motorist pulled a woman from a burning car early this morning, following a three-car crash on northbound County Road 83 in Coram that resulted in two of the drivers being arrested for driving while intoxicated, Suffolk police said.
The crash occured at approximately 1 a.m. between Hawkins Avenue and Route 112 and closed County Road 83 until almost 6:30 a.m., police said.
One of the vehicles involved, a 1997 Chevy Corvette, caught fire as a result of the crash, trapping a female passenger inside. Suffolk Police Lt. Mark Fisher, who was off-duty at the time, and another passerby, identified as Matthew Shackles of Coram, pulled the woman from the Corvette before the car was destroyed by fire.
Police did not identify the rescued woman.
Police said the driver of the Corvette, Joseph Hubert, 23, of Coram, was thrown from the vehicle in the accident. He was later arrested and charged with felony DWI after being taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with what were called "non-life-threatening injuries."
One of the other drivers, Betty Nava, 46, of Mastic, was charged with DWI and driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.
