couple of suspension questions....

I just had my suspension replaced about 600 miles ago. Around the past 300 miles, I've been hearing a clacking sound near my front suspension area when I brake and accelerate or when I go over the speed bumps in my complex. I used after-market ECS strut mounts and noticed that the rubber mount atop the strut tower was about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the tower. I saw in other posts that this was common with after-market strut mounts.
When I opened the hood this weekend, I noticed that the nut on the driver side that holds the strut to the strut tower was maybe 3-4 turns higher than the one on the passenger side. Could the extra space be causing my strut to bang up and down in certain situations (accelerating/braking)?
I also recently noticed that when I'm turning the wheel when it's at a stop, I hear a straining sound. Like when you pull a spring apart too far. What could be the cause of that?
Some additional info...I haven't brought the car in for an alignment since the suspension job...was waiting for the setup to settle and for a free weekend. Not sure if that could be the cause of the straining sound.
Any help/advice would be appreciated!

I'll loosen the nut next chance I get and see if that washer/spacer is there. Maybe I just need to tighten up the nut a little first and see if the noise goes away.
