Has anyone heard anything about having to pay more to get points dropped for a ticket?

My girlfriend got a speeding ticket in the Princeton area and we're planning on going to court to try to get some of the points dropped and the fine reduced. She mentioned that the last time she went in for a ticket, in order to even speak to the prosecutor to get some points dropped she had to pay some fee and then had to pay an additional fee to actually have the points dropped?
This doesn't make sense to me, since the time I fought a ticket, I just showed up, asked for some leniency and go 3 pts. taken off and a smaller fine, with no extra fees levied. Any ideas? TIA

but you can take a chance and ask for leniency. you can't just pay off the court to not get a points violation.
speak to the prosecutor, if he's feeling nice and the judge is decent, maybe he'll reduce the ticket to a no-points violation. it may be a heftier fine upfront, but you save on increased car insurance. its not that you are paying more to get the ticket reduced, you are just pleading to a lesser charge. but you could get a prosecutor that is not so nice and won't reduce it, or only reduce it to a lesser speeding violation that still carries points.
what you are actually saying is "i plead not guilty to the charge of speeding, but i plead guilty to the charge of unsafe driving." which carries a $250 fine for the first violation. you can only take this plea 3 times in 5 years. the next time it's a mandatory 4 point ticket.
