All I know is this....skiing better thank the living crap out of snowboarding for revitalizing the winter sports industry as a whole. Oh, and for revolutionizing ski designs (i.e. shaped skis).
As for challenging one's self...please name for me one thing that someone on skis has done that hasn't been matched or superceded by a snowboarder?
I've been snowboarding for 15 years after quitting skiing. I've also spent the past 8 years or so professionally judging some of the world's top snowboard competitions (The US Open, European Open, Vans Triple Crowns, USSA Grand Prix, Nippon Open, Toyota Big Air...you name it). And if you think that going down a 45 degree incline at 45 mile/hour and launching yourself 40 feet from the flat ground while spinning and flipping endlessly and repeating 8 times during one run is anything short of absolutely brilliant and amazing, then you're crazy.
Snowboarding has made skiers look at their two planks differently, there's no ifs ands or buts about it.

on top of revitilizing and energizing the ENTIRE WINTER SPORTS market. Skiing was Dying.....no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Snowboarding came along and basically saved it......no IFS, ANDS, or BUTS about that. PERIOD!
