Default How many of you B5 S4 guys have done your own timing belt?

My S4 currently have a little under 77k miles so its time to replace the belts, just wondering if any of your guys locally have done it yourself and if so are there any pointers you can give me that may not be in the AW write-up? My car isn't a daily driver so I'm in no rush to get it done in one shot, I'm going to take my time to make sure everything is perfect.

Also does anyone have a cam lock bar or bentley manual they would be willing to let me rent?

TIA
Jon

Default Here two cents from me, FWIW:

Put the nose in service position. Do not go to all the extra work to pull it all apart.

Use the tools correctly; free the cam sprockets and set cam timing. Do not count teeth or use marks or other witchcraft to set timing.

Change the seals. All the seals. Cam seals, cam plugs, cam adjuster seals, etc.

Yea after STFA I found that a lot of people said it was a lot more work but removing the nose completely made things a lot easier, but I would venture to guess that with all the proper tools it shouldn't be much more of a hassle. I saw this kit from BlauParts that has all the tools listed in the Bentley manual.

http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=N1A1009%2DE</a

Default i've done it a bunch of times. both with the rad support off and in service position

doesn't really take much longer to pull the front end to the side and it does make it easier. you need to loosen the sprockets to even the tension. give yourself a day the first time. and you need the cam lock bar for sure. if you're not replacing the front main, you don't need the crank lock pin.

Default Except that it's much easier to pull the center bolt to remove the harmonic balancer...

...than to pull all the 8mm bolts.
