My brother got into an accident the other night...
First and most importantly him and his friend are okay. He was picking up a friend from his house late last night. The development he was in is not lite at all; totally dark and a lot of curved roads. As they came around a corner a deer was sitting in the middle of the road. Natural reaction my brother swerve to the left to avoid the thing and hit a grass patch to the side of the road. He knew he wouldn't be able to stop being on the grass so they braced for impact. Luckily they were responsible and wore their seat beats. Here is the damage...

At first inspection i think the insurance company would declare it totaled. I dont believe the frame rail was bent though. It looks like most of the damage was do the front fender and suspension/controls. Due to the value of the car i don't think we are going to claim it on the insurance because it will sky-rocket being as my brother has only had his license for a year. I think we are just going to part the car out and then scrap whatever we cannot sell. The engine doesn't appear to have been effected. Starts and goings into gear fine. Airbags both deployed, windshield is cracked. I feel bad for my brother, its kind of a crappy situation to be in.
In all its most important that they are okay. In reality its just a car and it can be replaced.
What are your thoughts? Does parting it out seem to be the most logical route to go?

CLAIM IT!! If there were no other cars involved...
it goes under the comprehensive portion of you coverage, thus the insurance company cannot raise your rate.
In 1999 I hydroplaned my Jetta and did $12k worth of damage. Since I was the only car involved and it was a road condition that caused it, it was filed under comprehensive and my rate never budged.

I would not bank on that.
There is no deer impact on that car. It's all damage related to driving off the road. Comprehensive may not cover this even if you insist a deer forced you to go off the road. If he actually hit the deer, and that evidence was visible on the car, I would agree with you.
As for your previous experience...I really don't understand that. Most insurance companies would file that under collision, claiming you were driving too fast for conditions. And many officers would ticket you on the scene for the same. Being the only car involved doesn't absolve you from culpability.
I'd say a phone call to the insurance agent should cost him nothing. Don't file a claim, just ask the questions.

gland no one was hurt. Some deer (animal) avoidance tips I learned in VT
aim for the mvtherfvcker and punch the throttle! One of two things will happen:
The deer will continue on its way out of your path and all is well.
You will hit the deer anyway but you will do it with the nose of the car up hopfully hitting the deer high. stomping the brakes makes the nose dive causing you to hit it low which could put the deer into your windshield.
it seems counterintuitive but I hit a dag on a dirtbike once and had I maintained a straight path I wouldn't have hit it. Instead I turned to avoid it and veared into it and we both ended up bloodied (both of us were ok tho)

Thats what we were thinking...
Since he didn't hit the deer the insurance company would file it under collision although nobody else was involved. The officer on scene did write him a ticket for careless driving.
On the other hand if we were able to file it under Comprehensive were afraid that our insurance company will drop us because my brother did have an accident before this. Same thing, nobody else involved.
