You only need a Firearms ID card to purchase shotguns or rifles in NJ, no? Permit just for handguns

Default No, you need a firearms permit to purchase rifle/shotguns in nj.

You also need one to transport firearms.

If you have one in your house and you defend yourself against a burglar, you are in the clear.

You do not need to have a firearms permit to have a firearm in your residence, only purchase one.

Default Application for firearms id and pistol permit is technically separate

Most of the times the sergeant who does your paperwork will ask you if you want to apply for a pistol permit (which is only good for 90days, though there is an extension you can apply for) because the same process has to be followed.

If you go later to get a pistol permit to purchase a handgun, you will have to pay the application fee all over again because they run your prints with the feds etc etc again.

The pistol permit is only to purchase.
