Default PSA... New TSB from Audi/VW about Synth Oil specs and TURBOS

I was at KMD yesterday getting my 80K service. I noticed on the bill that Castol Synth 5W-50 was used. Danny said there is a new TSB from AoA/VWoA stating that turbo motors should now use 5W-60.. the spec oil of the RS6 and the M5. The problem with this is tht this spec is $28.00 per quart (at his price) and available ONLY at Audi or BMW dealers. He then called to Castrol and asked for the alternative and was told its the 5W-50.

The TSB was for the TURBO MOTORS only due to the amount of oil cooking in the turbo lines that has been reported.

Default Interesting. But probably not necessary with proper turbo cool down.

Not that I would advocate testing that theory ;-)

Default most likey as long as your using synth..and warming up./cool down.. its fine...

I'm not running myself nuts looking for 5W-50 either. I just find it interesting that AoA is making the change and I'm gratified that Danny is in the know about it.

Default I guess it depends on the motor, but on the 2.7T I think 5W50 is pretty heavy

I ran synthetic 5W50 in my old S4 once and the motor just didn't feel right. Car felt slower too. Switched back to the regular stuff and it was fine. On my present S4 I've stuck with Mobil 1 0W40 since I bought the car with 15K miles on it. I know its bad, but my average oil change interval is 10K miles.

I recently did a Blackstone analysis after letting the oil change interval slip to 11K miles and it came back excellent!

<img src="http://images12.fotki.com/v242/photos/6/663228/2714611/lAnalysis81Koncar11Kmilesonoil-vi.jpg">

I did this right before swapping the turbos. When the new turbo's went in a mix of 4 qts Mobil 1 0W40 and 3 qts Mobil 1 5W40 Truck&amp;SUV was used (the 5W40 supposedly has some extra cleaners). I'll be changing the oil this weekend after about 5K miles for another analysis to see how the turbo's are breaking in (or breaking, hehe...). Depending on how much 0W40 I can find I may or may not do the mix again.

Default This doesn't make sense...

Oil weights are prescribed based on the lubrication requirements of the engine. If a coking issue is discovered, the oil line needs to be redesigned. Prescribing a heavier oil is NOT the solution (it may help further coking a little bit, but if the line is plugged up, it may make the situation worse, in addition to not properly lubricating the engine).

As an example, there was a coking issue in the 97 and early 98 1.8T A4's. Audi's solution was a redesigned line with a shield to reduce the effects of heat from the turbo.

By any chance did you get a copy of this TSB?

If anybody is considering tossing in 5W50 or 5W60, I would give that some serious thought before doing so (even if it was on AoA's blessing).
