Default So, do we have low people in high places here?

I mean car salesmen :-). I might be finally giving up on the A4 (depending on the cost of repairs), and leasing something. I was thinking of leasing a certified pre-owned A4, or maybe something a little cheaper, like Mazda3 hatch. TIA.

Default lease a used car?

hand over money and get taken advantage of.
Just buy it and finance it.

Default don't see why not

however, as a disclaimer, I was employed by a captive finance company......, thus I know a thing or two about leasing.

I would however, ONLY recommend leasing a 2nd hand vehicle when it's under warranty for the complete term of the lease....

Default Then you know that most new car leases are done...

at artificial rates supported by the maker's need to move a vehicle. Either by rasing the residual or lowering the money factor. Right?

Once you go to a used car, you are going to be paying top dollar in interest as well as theoretical residuals, on top of the profit neede by the dealer and the leasing agent.

Default then you should know that one should NEVER enter a lease w.o the capability

of calculating a lease on your own.

You want examples:

My 2000 S4 was $360 a month, zero down, 15K miles a month (was bought used btw)

My 2005 Saab is currently $260 a month, zero down, 15K a month..(bought brand new, however, to examplify that one should ALWAYS consider obtaining outside quotes).

Neither one of these leases were done with dealership, all leased through leasecompare.com

It is actually not too bad leasing a used vehicle with a CPO warranty.....

Default 2nd Paulroad's comment

Leasing compnay may tell you $xxx.xx per month, but you have to know what the underlying variables are.

Inital Price of car
Residual Price of Car
figure out amt financed (assuming no capital cost reduction)
calculate the interest rate on that amount over the term of the lease

MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T GETTING SCREWED.

Do not fall for the "how much do you want to pay per month" game. It is a license to steal from you.

Twice I've done this little math experiement with potential leases. Dealer's interest rate was double digit.

Also ask about GAP insurance. ie what happens if car is totalled and blue book value is less than residual value on lease. You may end up remaining on the hook for a worthless car.

Default Exactly what I was thinking. Even if I bought new, I'd get extended warranty

I've been fixing my A4 at a "healthy" rate of $1k+ a year.

Default 36 months in both instances....regular lease return at the end

I got to pick at which particular, e.g. the dealer closest to home, I wanted to return the vehicle.

ZERO add'l charges for damages, e.g. contrary to Audi financial services, which has its vehicles inspected by SGS, which company does a great job in both identifying and documenting any visable charges.

My vehicle was returned with for instance winter tires (which were the tires on which the vehicle was delivered tome), and a few add'l scratches, seen as regular wear and tear).

Default good comments/concerns

As I mentioned before, If you're UNABLE to calculate the lease yourself, whether that's through the VW Vortex spreadsheet or with -for instannce- an HP 12C, you should not be entering a lease.

I have walked out of a VW dealership, when the salesperson was unwilling to provide me with the details on their money factor. This after I called him out on the lease rate being roughly $50 a month too high. I made him very well aware, as in threatened him, to report this to the proper NJ authorities. THIS AS EVERY PROVIDER FOR A CAR LEASE IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE ALL INFORMATION on the LEASE CALCULATION to the customer. They're usually hesitatnt to do so, as only one, sometimes two/three people at the dealership are allowed/entitled to provide financing/lease quotes...
