Anyone mitigate a red light ticket? What was your excuse?
I got nailed for running a red light (honestly thought it was yellow) on Denny a month back.
I can either show for my court date next Tuesday or write a letter for mitigation. I'd prefer to write a letter since it will save me time, but I have no idea what to write.
Since the ticket is assessed as a parking ticket, therefore no moving violation, I don't mind admiting fault, really just hoping they will lower the ticket amount ($101).

WOW, it's assessed as a PARKING ticket? I have no ill-will towards you,
and no interest in seeing you personally punished, but as dangerous as running a red light can be, I would hope that running a red light would generally be considered more serious than that. I mean, no one gets t-boned at 40mph if my parking meter expires. WTF is the deal with WSDOT? Or SDOT, or whomever it is making these decisions? Is it because the camera is unable to make judgements based on circumstance?
Again, not saying that you personally should be punished in this instance, just a little stunned on how the infraction is classified.

It's because they have no other info besides vehicle license. At this point, they can't prove
who was driving. So they are citing the "car", not a specific driver. If a cop saw someone run a light, it sure wouldn't be a non-moving violation. And that goes into your other question...how do you confront a camera in court and put them on the stand???

I have always been anti-automated for just about any fine/punishment system, and this just
reinforces that. The fact that it is recorded as a non-moving violation just goes to prove how little faith they have in their own technology and their awareness of how feeble this measure is.
Like you said, how do you put a camera on the stand?

Yep and see what you are saying
It wasn't blatant. I was in the intersection when it turned red, which is why I was surprised I got the ticket.
I do think the whole scheme is BS, they should have to prove who was in the car and ticket that person, no just issue tickets at will.
