While he no doubt reiterated how important smoothness is to being fast, he also slid toward the dark side (away from Ross Bentley and toward Danny Sullivan) regarding braking when racing. I'm going to loosely paraphrase Randy from memory and do not have the article on hand for reference: His comment was that while smooth application of throttle, brakes, and steering input is usually preferred, he suggested in this column that there is one instance where very late and very harsh braking in a straight line can be a winning combination if done correctly: at the end of a high-speed straight, going into a threshold braking zone. He acknowledged that such a tactic might be inherently unsmooth, but also suggested that it is generally a successful one (with the intent to be on the brakes for the shortest possible duration).
Having said that, in an indoor karting situation, I reckon you want to brake as little as possible, so smoothness is going to be your friend for sure.

Pobst is a nice guy for sure. I only met him BRIEFLY at a Qfest event. I should have dragged him into my FWD car, but there was huge demand for his coaching.
He did put me to sleep during his talk at the Qfest 2004 dinner though. Sorry to say. I embarrassed David very badly by nodding off. Hah.
